Dear Lubert Family,My family was so saddened to hear the news about Chad. Our son, Carsten, played on the boys basketball team that Chad started. Carsten had been treated for several years for leukemia and hadn't really been physically fit enough to do sports. He was finally through that though, and wanted to play basketball with his school friends. We signed him up but there was no spot available on the team with his buddies. He was placed on a team with boys all in the same situation. He told me he didn't want to be on that team and I understood. The next night though, I got a call from Chad's co-coach, Ryan, and he seemed so enthusiastic and said that he and his friends were really looking forward to coaching. I told Carsten that these coaches weren't "just dads" but cool young guys and the enthusiasm of a coach can make all the difference. He decided to try the team out and he has played with them ever since. He LOVES playing with this team of guys whom he would never have known otherwise because win or lose, they are a TEAM bonded by strong, kind, dedicated coaches when they were just 8 years old. Your son was a role model for my boy who is now 16 years old, healthy and headed toward a future of success. Chad left my son with gifts about life that he will carry forever.My hope for your family is that your terrible heartache can at some point be replaced with the happy memories you have of Chad.With sincerest sympathy, Adrienne Connolly

Allison, Lenny and family. I would of hoped the day would never come for anyone to feel the pain that our family felt. I know the hurt and devastation that you're feeling. I can't say it will ever be easy. There will never be a day that will go by that your hearts won't hurt. All I can say is to just try and think of all the good memories that you had with him and don't ever blame yourselves because I know what amazing loving parents you are. My deepest condolences. This is a very sad moment for me, the Runnin' Rebels basketball team, and to everyone that knew Coach Chad, my condolences go out to his family. Coach Chad was one of my first basketball coaches and I've learned a lot from him in the few years that he has coached me. In my first season of playing basketball, 2009-2010, we made it to the championship finals, we lost by 1 point though. I regret not winning a 1st place trophy with Coach Chad, so now every basketball win, every basketball trophy will be for Coach Chad. There's one thing that I've learned from Coach Chad that I'll never forget, "The backboard is your friend." -Coach Chad. Coach Chad will forever have a place in my heart along with Coach Ryan, and Coach Drew, for being my first, and my best basketball coaches because they're the ones that have made me the basketball player I am today. Dear Lubart Family,My sincere sympathies go out to your family. I just wanted to share some of my memories of Chad.Chad and I were roommates during the time he spent in Arlington, VA. We met during our work orientation and became fast friends. It was easy to become friends with Chad. He was quick to smile, quicker to make those around him smile with a joke or a witty comment, and was about as knowledgeable about all things sports as anyone I ever knew. More importantly, though, Chad was a truly kind hearted person who cared about the people around him.I moved to the DC area at the same time as Chad did, and didnâ??t really know anybody. Chad introduced me to his friends, and they quickly became my friends, too. He invited me over to watch football on Sundays, picked me up for softball games even though the field was far from my apartment, but right next to his, and later, after we became roommates, he lent me his car more times than I can count. It didnâ??t matter if it was for five minutes or for the day, if Chad didnâ??t have plans he would always offer to let me use his car if I needed it.I have a lot of memories of the time I spent with Chad, but the best ones are probably the result of him convincing me to coach a youth basketball team with him. Together with our friend Drew, we taught a group of 3rd graders how to play basketball, and continued coaching them for the remainder of the time Chad spent in DC. Those kids, our little Runninâ?? Rebels, have continued playing on the same team together to this very day, and are now in high school. When it all started we got the â??misfitâ? team of all the kids who werenâ??t assigned to another team (we were the only coaches without kids in the league) and these kids from all different schools around Arlington formed friendships in the 3rd grade that have endured through all of those years of growing up, and continue to hold strong about 8 years later. Chad did that. Without him, there would be no Runninâ?? Rebels, no bonds formed between these kids who would otherwise have remained strangers. I stopped coaching this year, but I plan to go to a game in the coming weeks, and when I do I will cheer on the Runninâ?? Rebels of Arlington, VA one more time for my friend Chad.-Ryan McGuinness
Dear Alison, Lenny and Jordan,Melanie found out through Facebook that Chad passed away. My deepest condolences go out to you. I will always remember how much he loved Melanie when they were little and I will never forget the day at the beach when a little boy was talking to Melanie and Chad raced over and said "Stay away from her I am going to "MAWWY" her!May you find the strength and courage to get you through this devastating time.Amy Levy
