Harry Shooster's Obituary
Harry Shooster, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 21, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ida, his four children, Michele Saland (Stephen Kalstein) of Philadelphia, PA; Helaine Gordon (Richard) of Wilmington, DE; Donald (Kathy) of Media, PA; and Daniel (Leslee) of Boca Raton, FL. In addition, he is survived by twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brothers Herman and Isadore.Harry was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1916, to immigrant parents Dora and Frank Shooster. He graduated from Chester High School, and attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.He and his family built Shooster’s Drive-In Restaurant in Chester, PA, which became an iconic destination, hosting the likes of Bill Haley and the Comets. Harry was a self-made businessman. He was a realtor and developer and served on the board of the Builder’s Association of Delaware County, PA. He developed numerous residential and commercial properties, as well as the Festival Flea Market Mall in Pompano Beach, Florida.In addition, he was a community leader, a talented artist, and a poet. He was a legendary gin rummy player, and knew his way around a golf course.He was proud of his heritage, and devoted himself to worldwide Jewish and humanitarian causes. He served for three years as president of Congregation Ohev Shalom, Wallingford, PA. He was recognized for his philanthropy by numerous organizations, including Israel Bonds, the Israel Cancer Society, the World Jewish Congress, and the Jewish Federation of Broward County, FL.In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to Hospice By The Sea, 1531 W. Palmetto Park Rd, Boca Raton, FL 33486, or to the Jewish Federation of Broward County, FL, 5890 S. Pine Island Road, Suite A, Davie, FL 33328.Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 11am, at The Levitt Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 7500 North State Road 7, Coconut Creek, FL, 33073. Burial to follow at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens, 11520 U.S. 441, Boynton Beach, FL 33473A memorial service will take place on Sunday, June 8th, at 11:00 am at Congregation Ohev Shalom, Wallingford, PA, 2 Chester Road, Wallingford, PA 19086 (intersection of routes 320 and 252). .
