Howard Tabankin's Obituary
Howard Tabankin, 78
May 6, 1947 – September 9, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Howard Tabankin, who passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and friends at his home in Boynton Beach, FL.
Born on May 6, 1947, in the Bronx, NY, Howard was the cherished son of Abraham and Anne, and the brother of Shelly and Kenny. He grew up in New York City, where he formed enduring friendships that spanned his lifetime.
Howard’s career began as a glazier at Aggressive Shade, Glass & Awning Co., a business founded by his father in 1953. In 1982, Howard took the helm of the company, growing it into one of New York City's largest non-union glass shops, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication.
His devotion to service was evident in his remarkable 45-year career as a part-time Deputy Sheriff with the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department. Throughout his service, he worked in various capacities, including Patrol, Dispatch, the Mounted Unit, and the Marine Unit. He also served with the Village of Fishkill Police Department, where he earned the rank of Sergeant before retiring.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Howard combined his passion for public service with philanthropy. In 1995, he founded an annual event that brought together the Ronald McDonald House, the NYPD, and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department. This event gave children undergoing long-term cancer treatment the opportunity to enjoy demonstrations, horse rides, and meaningful interactions with law enforcement officers. This tradition continues to this day, a testament to Howard’s commitment to making a difference.
Howard was known for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and the joy he brought to those around him. A gifted storyteller, he was also deeply devoted to his family, friends, and community. His legacy will be remembered for his generosity, his unwavering sense of humor, and the love he shared with those he held dear.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audrey; his sons, Scott (Jessica) and Shawn (Jennifer); and his beloved grandchildren, Samara, Arianna, Chase, Addyson, and Ephren. Howard's son Scott carries on the family legacy as the owner of Aggressive Shade & Glass, while his son Shawn has honored his father’s call to public service as a Colonel in the United States Army.
Howard’s legacy is one of family, service, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will be a blessing to all who were touched by his life.
