Mitchell Matthew Liebowitz's Obituary
Mitchell Matthew Liebowitz, deeply beloved father, son, and partner, passed away at his home in Boca Raton, Florida on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020 from complications due to multiple myeloma. Mitchell will be remembered by all who knew him as a profoundly kind, gentle, and funny soul who gave generously of his time, talent, compassion, and humor to anyone blessed with the good fortune to cross his path.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Eli and Lorraine Liebowitz, Mitchell Liebowitz was a New Yorker through and through, even after relocating to Los Angeles where he would attend UCLA, marry, and begin his family. He was a tremendously devoted father to his only daughter, Brigitte, with whom he enjoyed a close and wonderful relationship.
His passion in life was service to others, particularly within the recovery community and in his career as Program Coordinator at Headwaters at Origins, where he derived great joy from supporting others in their journeys to sobriety. He was known to clients and colleagues for his openness, sensitivity, and judgement-free friendship as well as his ability to find the silver lining in any situation.
He was an animal lover, a vocal advocate of liberal causes, and the family grill master. He loved comedy and possessed a very quick but gentle wit and had an uncanny ability to make you feel as though you were in on all his jokes. He could make anyone laugh, even in the unfunniest of circumstances. A naturally creative spirit, Mitchell was also a lover of the arts. He was a talented pianist, amateur saxophone player, and liked to write short, humorous stories, particularly for children as well as inimitably comical Facebook posts.
He exuded paternal energy, and lots of people found comfort under his warm wing. He supported and mentored many people and was known lovingly as “Uncle Mitch.” He was devoted to his parents and to his fiancée, Margo, and their many dogs. He is survived by his mother Lorraine, fiancée Margo, daughter Brigitte, former spouse Mary, and large community of dear friends. His absence in their lives will be acutely and perpetually felt, but so will the love he gave selflessly to all.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
